What We Do
Lexington Fairness is working to supply LGBTQ+ affirming literature in multiple languages for all K-12 public schools, public library branches, and libraries of some organizations and private schools in Fayette County. An emphasis will be placed on age-appropriateness and intersectional representation. We want our young people to be able to see themselves, their friends, their families, their friends’ families depicted in accessible and affirming literature.
For many LGBTQ+ individuals, schools have been places of harassment, bullying, discrimination, and violence. A 2017 School Climate Study by GLSEN notes that only 11% of LGBTQ+ students were taught positive representations of LGBTQ+ people, history, or events(inclusive curriculum.) Supplying affirming literature to school libraries provides educators and students with materials to foster discussion around inclusion and living authentically.
We hope to continue this project by donating additional books in the future. If you would like to help make this project possible, please donate to Lexington Fairness today.
